World Widows Day conference held in Nairobi was a remarkable event, filled with encouragement, education, comfort, and hope for widows at various stages of their journey. With the theme “We See You,” it marked the beginning of many similar initiatives.

Swahiba Networks sponsored several participants from our Widows for Widows program to attend the World Widows Day conference. This event provided an opportunity for widows to interact with others from diverse backgrounds. Key speakers were invited to discuss crucial topics such as estate planning, investment after loss, maintaining family legacy, raising children, succession planning, and safeguarding children. Peter Abungu, delivered an empowering speech on uplifting one widow at a time. Other speakers covered themes like second chances at love and the concept of a “Widows Power Bank” by a grief therapist.

According to the United Nations, Kenya has an estimated eight million widows and ranks 33rd in terms of harsh environments for widows globally. This underscores the pressing need to support widows and create safe spaces for them, which in turn helps care for the children affected. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.”

Some of the widows shared their thoughts:

  • “We widows need to get empowered and connected because it’s a lonely journey. We can help others avoid the challenges we have faced.”
  • “The only people who can understand widows well are God and another widow.”

This event was a significant step toward empowering widows and fostering a supportive community for them.
