Tabasamu Mikindani

There are some moments in life that words can barely describe—like the joy of receiving your very first proper pair of shoes. Only those who’ve walked barefoot or in improper shoes can truly tell that story. And through the Tabasamu (Smile) Initiative, more children can now share that story firsthand.

This week, our team is in Mombasa County, where high temperatures are part of everyday life. For many children from vulnerable backgrounds, plastic shoes, though far from ideal, are their best option—shoes that trap heat and force them to pour water on their feet just to make walking bearable.

But thanks to the incredible support from Because International , we’ve been able to provide #TheShoeThatGrows—shoes that are durable, adjustable, open-toed, and made to grow with each child’s feet. These are more than shoes—they’re tools of comfort, dignity, and opportunity.

So far, we’ve distributed 703 pairs of shoes across four schools:

Nazarene Primary, Ganahola

St. Jude, Mikindani

Jerusalem, Bangladesh

St. Agatha, Bangladesh

We’re also grateful to Colgate Kenya for donating toothbrushes and toothpaste, ensuring that each child not only walks away with new shoes, but also with tools for better health.

And perhaps the most meaningful part of it all: we shared the message of hope through the Gospel. Eighty-two children made the decision to begin a new life in Christ and received Bibles and a 12-week discipleship manual to help them grow in their faith.

Every step tells a new story, little feet now run free, dream big, and smile wide. Thank you, Because International, for The Shoes That Grow.
