This is the story about how I came to know Christ and how it has brought me here all these years later to Kenya on a mission trip with Burnt Hickory Baptist Church. I grew up in a Christian home and was surrounded by a loving family who always went to church every Sunday. As I grew up, Jesus was the common name I heard, and I knew all the Bible stories by heart. Living in a family like that, my heart naturally drew towards Christ.
Fast forward a couple of years, transitioning from 8th grade to 9th grade, I always kept my morals and values close to my heart, but the world threw temptations at me that were so compelling that I let them control my soul. I started hanging out with the wrong crowd and got into relationships that God never intended for me. This truly took me from the path of God and put me down a dark road I never thought I could recover from. I fell into a deep depression and believed the lies of the enemy, Satan, who told me I would never be good enough. I was dealing with a lot of hardships and challenges at the time, and as someone who tends to keep to myself, I pushed away the people I loved the most because I didnโt want them to see me at my lowest. This made me very lonely.
This caused me to do very bad things to others and myself, and I reached a point in my life where I did not want to be alive anymore. I felt so guilty and sinful and thought God would never accept me again. But thankfully, that is not the case, and God will always welcome you home with open arms. My brother had a big impact on my life, and I donโt think I would be here today without him. When I wanted to lock my doors and shut out everyone in my life, including God, my brother was always there to take me back to church and make me smile when I was at my lowest and had no reason to keep going. I saw God use and speak through my brother in so many ways, and I am so thankful God ran after me and never gave up on me. He called me His child.
Therefore, because of His unfailing love and mercy, I get to be here today in Kenya, on this trip, meeting and sharing Godโs word with children and adults. I also have the privilege of going into people’s homes and providing them with food. I am so thankful to be here and experience these life-changing moments. I wouldnโt trade it for the world.
